Late July and Early August feature three back-to-back one day CYCS regattas in one of the most scenic parts of Maine. The Maine distance regattas are the Castine Classic Yacht Race, the Camden to Brooklin Race, and the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta. These regattas are made up of one race and feature some of the best classic yacht sailing in the summer season. We talked with the organizers of these regattas for our Regatta Spotlight series to get a sense of what to expect this summer.
Next up, Jamie Landi of the Camden To Brooklin Race:
What is the history and tradition behind this regatta, and how does it influence the experience for participants?
Jamie Landi: Summer 2025 will be the 38th running of the Camden to Brooklin Feeder Race. The departure from Camden Harbor and race through the many islands of Penobscot Bay, Stonington and into the Eggemoggin Reach to Brooklin is iconic and a "must do" in the classic yacht circuit.
What sets the fleet of classic yachts at your regatta apart from other similar events? Are there specific types of yachts or notable vessels that regularly participate?
JL: The feeder race welcomes boats and programs from across the classic yacht field. We have a long history of being a "come join" event and often celebrate a featured boat on the Thursday evening before the event offering tours and raising funds for the Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program (CAYSP). Most recently, the 12m Gleam was featured and graciously offered tours.
What is special at your event to celebrate the classic yacht racing community during the event?
JL: The Camden Yacht Club hosts a "welcome" celebration the Thursday evening before the event and a breakfast for racers the morning of the event. The views and boats are beautiful and camaraderie is always high.
What aspects of your regatta make it a must-attend event for sailors and enthusiasts—whether it’s the location, race format, social atmosphere, or something else?
JL: July/August in Camden and on Penobscot Bay are hard to beat. The destination race adds a fun and adventurous dynamic, and regatta fees go to support the Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program - we view this donation supporting youth sailing as an investment in future crew and stewards of classic yachts!
